Leading the Charge for Change: OCC 2024 Impact and Six Years of Saving Lives
At Operation Colony Cats (OCC), 2024 was a year of hard work, dedication, and remarkable achievements for cats in Mississippi and beyond. As we reflect on the past year—and the past six years—we are proud to share the impact we’ve made together with our community of volunteers, supporters, and partners.
Our 2024 Accomplishments
- 1,143 cats spayed and neutered – Preventing countless litters and reducing suffering.
- 652 cats and kittens transported to Sweet Paws Rescue in Massachusetts – Giving these animals a new chance at life in loving homes.
- 16 cats and kittens placed through Oktibbeha County Humane Society – Connecting animals to safe, caring environments.
- 4 medical cases adopted locally – Providing necessary care and permanent homes.
A Look Back: 2019-2024
Over the past six years, OCC has:
- Spayed and neutered 6,672 cats and kittens, drastically reducing the homeless cat population in our state.
- Transported 3,218 cats and kittens to Sweet Paws Rescue, ensuring these animals never contribute to overpopulation in Mississippi.
- Partnered with Oktibbeha County Humane Society to transport 361 cats and kittens across the U.S. and Canada.
Our collective efforts have made a difference, but our mission is far from over.
The Heart of Our Mission
Our trapping team sterilized 345 feral cats this year alone, stabilizing colonies and reducing future suffering. We believe in the power of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), a proven method to humanely manage cat populations. Removing feral cats without addressing the food sources only creates a vacuum for more cats to move in. TNR ensures stable, healthy colonies while minimizing conflict with neighbors and businesses. Mississippi’s heartbreaking distinction of having the highest euthanasia rate in the nation drives us to do better—and we will.
Fostering Hope
With over 750 cats fostered in 2024, our foster families provided crucial care and love. Most of these cats—652 of them—were transported to Boston, where they found homes and avoided contributing to overpopulation here. The cycle of suffering caused by unchecked breeding, abandoned pets, and impulsive adoptions can only be broken by proactive spaying and neutering.
Our Unsung Heroes: Drivers
Our dedicated volunteer drivers ensure that cats reach spay/neuter clinics and health exams, often before heading to work and using their own resources. This work is vital, and we always need more helping hands to transport our precious cargo.
Why We Do It
OCC is powered entirely by volunteers—no one receives a paycheck. We do this because we believe in teamwork, education, and compassion. Every life saved, every colony stabilized, and every adoption completed fuels our commitment to being stewards of the animals in our community.
Looking Ahead to 2025
In 2025, we aim to spay and neuter more cats than ever. With your support, we can reduce suffering and improve lives in the Golden Triangle and beyond.
